QPP disability benefits: complete guide 2026
The Quebec Pension Plan (QPP/RRQ) disability pension is paid to contributors who have a severe and prolonged disability. This guide covers amounts, eligibility criteria, the automatic conversion at age 65, and children's benefits.
Amounts and calculation 2026
The QPP disability pension has two components. The first is a flat-rate portion of $583.19/month in 2026, which is the same for all eligible beneficiaries regardless of their past contribution level.
The second component is an earnings-based portion, equivalent to approximately 75% of the retirement pension calculated at the date of disability. For a contributor who contributed at the maximum throughout their career, this portion can reach approximately $1,023/month, bringing the total to approximately $1,606/month.
For contributors with periods of low income or career interruptions, the pension will be proportionally reduced. However, the QPP's drop-out provisions allow the least advantageous periods to be excluded from the calculation, which optimizes the final amount.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the QPP disability pension, the contributor must meet three conditions. First, they must have contributed sufficiently to the plan. The general rule requires valid contributions during at least 4 of the last 6 years, or during at least 2 of the last 3 years if the person has contributed for at least 25 years.
Second, the contributor must be under age 65. From age 60 onwards, if the person does not meet the strict definition of disability, they may instead apply for the early retirement pension with a 0.6% per month reduction.
Third, the disability must be severe and prolonged. "Severe" means the person is regularly unable to hold any substantially gainful employment. "Prolonged" means the disability is of indefinite duration or is likely to result in death. A detailed medical evaluation is required to support the application.
Application process and timelines
The disability pension application is made to Retraite Quebec. The form requires detailed information about the health condition, treatments received, and work incapacity. A medical report must be provided by the attending physician.
Processing time is generally 3 to 6 months. In the event of a refusal, the applicant can request a review within 90 days. If the review is also unfavourable, an appeal before the Tribunal administratif du Quebec (TAQ) is possible.
The pension can be paid retroactively up to 12 months before the application date, provided the disability already existed at that time. It is therefore recommended to apply as soon as the disability is confirmed to avoid losing benefits.
Automatic conversion at age 65
At age 65, the QPP disability pension is automatically converted to a retirement pension. The beneficiary does not need to take any action. The retirement pension amount is calculated as if the contributor had continued making maximum contributions throughout the disability period.
This mechanism protects disabled beneficiaries against loss of pension rights. Without this provision, years of disability (with no employment income) would considerably reduce the future retirement pension. The resulting retirement pension is often close to the maximum.
It is important to note that the retirement pension amount after conversion may be different (generally lower) than the disability pension, since the flat-rate portion of $583.19 is no longer part of the calculation. The advisor must prepare the client for this change.
Disabled contributor's child benefit
Children of a contributor receiving the QPP disability pension are also entitled to a benefit. In 2026, the amount is $98.14/month per eligible child under age 18.
If the child is between 18 and 25 years old and is attending a full-time educational institution, the benefit may continue. This benefit is taxable in the child's hands, but tax is generally zero or minimal given their typically low income.
This benefit is in addition to the parent's disability pension and can help maintain the family's standard of living during the disability period. The advisor should ensure the application is made for each eligible child.
Coordination with private disability insurance
Most private disability insurance contracts (individual and group) contain a coordination clause with the QPP. When the client receives the QPP disability pension, the private insurer reduces its benefit by the QPP amount. The total income therefore remains the same, but the source changes.
Insurers often require the client to apply for the QPP disability pension before agreeing to pay the full private benefit. A refusal to apply to the QPP can result in an automatic reduction of the private benefit equivalent to the presumed QPP amount.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the eligibility criteria for the QPP disability pension?
You must have contributed sufficiently to the QPP, be under age 65, and have a severe and prolonged disability. Severe means the person is regularly unable to hold any substantially gainful employment. Prolonged means the disability is of indefinite duration or is likely to result in death.
What is the QPP disability pension amount in 2026?
The disability pension has two components: a flat-rate portion of $583.19/month and an earnings-based portion (up to 75% of the calculated retirement pension). The maximum total is approximately $1,606/month in 2026.
Does the QPP disability pension automatically convert at age 65?
Yes. At age 65, the disability pension is automatically converted to a retirement pension. The retirement pension is calculated as if the contributor had continued contributing at the maximum throughout the disability period.
Can you work while receiving the QPP disability pension?
A gradual return to work is possible. Retraite Quebec allows a work trial during which the pension is maintained. If earnings exceed a certain threshold for an extended period, the pension may be suspended. The goal is to encourage reintegration without penalizing the beneficiary.
Is the QPP disability pension coordinated with private disability insurance?
Yes. Most private and group disability insurance contracts include a coordination clause with the QPP. If the client receives the QPP disability pension, the private insurer reduces its benefit accordingly. The advisor must check the coordination clauses in each contract.
